The “Invisible Hand” in the Lakes Region

Posted in Lakes Region on April 22nd, 2010 by 1 Comment

I had a good friend who always seemed to be misplacing things. Out of habit I always replied that as space is truly finite it follows that chances for recovery of the item then must be infinite, always a optimistic view. A handy solipsism perhaps but not at all applicable to waterfront properties here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Why, because of an almost infinite demand for this particular finite resource.

MLS# 2829811, New Hampshire Lakes Region Waterfront Property

The Lakes Region is a finite resource...

Last week, 4/12/10 through 4/18/10, our chief search engine, Google, reported that our website received 2,301 visits from 22 separate countries. This total is also broken down by new visitors, 47.85% and the average of 4 minutes 6 seconds per visit. Impressive to be sure and that reflects the broad international interest in what the Lakes Region of New Hampshire has to offer as a second-home haven. Though I have to suspect the sole visit from Fiji was likely a local on vacation and who was checking out the live web cam video of Wolfeboro or Alton Bay.

The above figures do serve to underline the strong market interest in Lakes Region properties as well as the accessibility of complete and timely information available to browsers, investors and homesick expatriates on the PSH site. But a leading website is more than just the result of a large amount of invested capital and skillful design. Anyone with the means and commitment can achieve a semblance of success and turn out an attractive product. We strive to surpass this worthy goal by additionally pledging our negotiation skills, time saver methods and efficiency expertise to our clientele. Our teamwork is unmatched.

So, where are we? The knowledge and ability to account for that large “Invisible Hand” of Adam Smith, Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek and connecting with it in a way helpful to both the seller and buyer is what we offer at Prudential Spencer Hughes. No more, no less, only better than anyone else.

Sailing on the Big Lake

Posted in Lake Winnipesaukee on May 10th, 2009 by Be the first to comment

For some the joy is in the journey. For others it is where the journey can take them. Now I enjoy a day on the big lake by whatever mode of transportation I happen to using. But I have noted that sailing offers additional pleasures over motoring, at least for me. I like the involvement of handling the lines, the feel of the tiller, the positioning of the boat to the wind. That sense of accomplishment of having moved from point A to point B and back using only the natural forces and physics.

There are several sailing organizations operating on Lake Winnipesaukee. The Winnipesaukee Yacht Club dates from 1937 and operates as a private club based in Gilford. The Meredith Bay Sailing Association on Lake Winnipesaukee is a certified community sailing program whose objective is to provide people of Lakes Region sailing opportunities. There are also well established programs at several summer camps along the lake and Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro offers sailing seamanship as part of its curriculum.

I am an avid supporter and member of The Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association. The LWSA runs a sailing school for children from 8 to 16 years of age. Their fleet of over 20 boats supports an active classroom and water program for all interests, abilities and means. Sponsoring adult racing activities for a mixed fleet the association offers a convivial atmosphere before, during and after every event. Serious racers can participate in the J/80 fleet events held weekly through the summer months. The LWSA has the impressive national credentials of being named Fleet 1 of the J/80 class sailboat. This season’s kick off dinner will be held May 14th at the Lyon’s Den in Glendale. This is a very active and committed group supporting and promoting interest in sailing for all ages and skills. Visit them most any Saturday morning a Fay’s Boatyard in Gilford and perhaps you’ll be invited to crew on a boat for the day’s sail.

Regardless, every boater on Lake Winnipesaukee has many of choices for itineraries: lunch in Meredith, cocktails in Alton Bay, dinner in Wolfeboro, island hopping and sightseeing everywhere. The big lake is the crown jewel of the Lakes Region and provides unique experiences for everyone sampling the lifestyles offered here in New Hampshire.

Mount Washington Reflections

Though not part of the Lakes Region area of New Hampshire this 6,288’ mountain dominates the northern horizon and offers its part to the whole of life in New Hampshire. The mountain boasts some of the severest weather in the lower 48 and has the recorded highest wind speed of 231 MPH on the planet. So what? It’s inspirational to gaze upon.

The Laconia 2009 motorcycle week is scheduled for June 13th through the 21st.  On the 15th is the not to be missed exclusive motorcycle run up the Mt. Washington Auto Road. A chance to eat some snow, climb some rocks and stand in the wind at the highest point in the Northeastern United States.

On my drive to my office in Alton Bay I can occasionally glimpse the Mt. This time of year it seems this snow capped sentinel of the North Country must soon be striped to bare granite by the winds that must be raking it.  As someone once said “its not a good place to be with just your Tour Master boots on”.

Why bring this fact to blog dedicated to real estate? I suppose I am struck by the geographical fact that Alton Bay is approximately 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and the same distance to the Mount Washington valley. Of the 3 main biker rallies, Daytona, Sturgis and Laconia only the latter can offer mountains, lakes and the ocean within a day’s ride. Enjoying Rye beach and then making a run to the Alpine zone at the summit of Mt. Washington is a fun thing to do.

The joy of owning a second home in the Lakes Region didn’t begin when colonial Governor Wentworth built his house near Wolfeboro on the shore of the lake that now bears his name.  After all the Abnakis and Pennacooks had already been regulars at the Weirs for centuries. Seasonal cottages, island homes, waterfront properties, ski chalets and the sense of belonging to something uniquely special all contribute to an enhanced lifestyle for the Lakes Region second home owner.
